Our Milestones

1994

Chris George and Lisa Hingley begin a “virtual” home-based communications business
(years before a virtual biz was accepted) with a network of freelance writers, graphic designers, communications consultants, and a translator. The first client was Gus Zygoumis, owner of Dustmoon Maintenance. (Sidenote: the first browser, Netscape Navigator, was introduced in the summer of 1994 and it was only after that when websites became easily accessible.)

1995

The new firm introduced the name “CG&A Communications” (CG&A) and a distinctive
burgundy box logo was unveiled. The firm was given contracts from Mindshare Marketing
Group, and Chris was named the lead consultant with Canadian Automated Air Traffic Control
System (CAATS) at Transport Canada. That summer, the CG&A work partnership became
personal when Chris and Lisa married.

1996

CG&A began working with Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Canada helping to
develop a strategic plan for government and its public policy agenda. For 14 years CG&A
managed MADD Canada’s national public relations and government affairs programs,
supporting the National Presidents’ tours, managing government relations, directing national media relations, event planning, creating print and on-line materials including the national website.

1996 Cont’d

The company took off when it defeated more than 120 PR firms in a RFP process for the
newly privatized Ottawa International Airport. CG&A served as the public relations agency of record through the formative years of the airport’s growth, providing media, wordsmith services, event management, and strategic communications.

1997

Through the 1990s Chris and Lisa were also involved in politics: Chris took on the
campaign management for Ottawa mayoralty candidate Jim Watson while Lisa worked contracts at Queen’s Park and later Ottawa City Hall. Both worked election campaigns at every level of government.

1998

CG&A became the government and public relations agency for Ottawa’s newly opened
Perley and Rideau Veterans’ Health Centre – a 450-bed, long-term care facility for veterans and seniors with dementia. For almost four years, the firm supported senior executives and the board in their challenges to attain proper government funding and positioned the Health Centre’s services within the National Capital Region’s evolving health care scene.

1999

CG&A provided services for more than half a dozen clients including full communications support to MADD Canada, the Ottawa International Airport, and the Perley Rideau Veterans’ Health Centre.

2000

Chris served as the lead communications counsel to the Ottawa Transition Board, providing strategic advice and services to board members, and managing the communications
office team through the pivotal year of amalgamation activities of 13 municipalities for the birth of the new City of Ottawa.

2001

In completing the Ottawa Transition Board, CG&A became the public relations company of record for Hydro Ottawa and Commissionaires, as well as servicing Hydro Ottawa sister companies, Energy Ottawa and Telecom Ottawa. With Hydro Ottawa, CG&A counseled the
CEO and senior management team on communications issues, helped establish its corporate brand, and assisted with the implementation of both its internal and external communications
programs.

2001 Cont’d

In the fall, CG&A became the communications company of record to support the federal
advocacy activities of provincial and territorial education ministers within the Council of
Ministers of Education, Canada (CMEC) Copyright Consortium. Chris served on a consortium subcommittee to provide strategic communications advice and services respecting copyright and education issues.

2002

Work with Commissionaires expanded and CG&A established the security force profile and its expertise with emerging security issues. Based on the work with Commissionaires
Ottawa, CG&A began providing services to other divisions across the country.

Chris and Lisa moved from Ottawa, across the province, to St. Catharines to establish CG&A in the Niagara Region and Greater Toronto Area.

2003

Chris provided communications counsel and services to the senior management of Niagara Parks Commission. CG&A also provided wordsmith
and internal communications counsel to the new client ACCO Canada.

2004

CG&A began reaching out for contract work with local businesses and associations, including Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Niagara.

2005

The George family became involved with NASK, an anaphylaxis awareness support group in Niagara, which led to Chris co-founding the Canadian Anaphylaxis Initiative, a network of Canadian families committed to raising awareness of anaphylaxis with parliamentarians in
Ottawa.

2006

Through the 2000s, with MADD Canada, Chris had developed a comprehensive
advocacy program that was engaged in Ottawa and with every provincial legislature. In the fall, CG&A helped to orchestrate MADD Canada to showcase PM Stephen Harper launching the organization’s annual red ribbon holiday awareness campaign.

2007

CG&A managed MADD Canada’s involvement on Parliament Hill and the passage of important new federal impaired driving legislation. The federal laws dealing with drug impaired driving and the elimination of the two-beer defense were issues MADD Canada had fought for more than 8 years!

2008

Work with CMEC resulted in the introduction of essential federal copyright legislation and a sought after internet amendment for the education community in Canada. This was a new line in the sand for copyright users’ rights, specifically for teachers in the classroom. Also
CG&A was providing services to the National Roundtable on the Environment and the Economy and strategic counsel services for the Nova Scotia Educational Leadership Consortium.

In November, the on-line By George Journal was launched to share ideas on PR and GR tactics and to provide bons mots and humourous pieces for use in the workplace and social settings.

2009

Chris was contracted by West Lincoln Memorial Hospital (WLMH) to develop a long-term communications plan for the construction and opening of a new hospital building serving
Grimsby and the western Niagara community. CG&A became the communications and
government affairs company of record for WLMH and for the West Haldimand General Hospital in Hagersville.

2010

Chris served on the board of the Child Advocacy Centre Niagara, an organization that supports children and youth who have been physically and/or sexually abused, have become the targets of internet luring, or were unwilling witnesses of violence.

2011

CG&A worked with Niagara Parks Commission, ACCO Canada, as well as the New Exporters to Border States (Ontario), a program of the Canadian Consulate office in Buffalo, NY, and with Celebration Casinos and their bidding documents for an Ontario Government procurement process. After 14 years, CG&A parted ways with MADD Canada.

By George Journal began to feature daily QOTD posts on Facebook and Twitter and produce a
regular stream of inspirational and motivational quotes.

2012

The copyright landscape for the Canadian education sector shifted positively with the passage of a new copyright law and a Supreme Court decision, both validating the CMEC ministers’ copyright policy position and marking a successful conclusion to more than a decade of government affairs activity in the federal copyright reform process.

2013

The Canadian Anaphylaxis Initiative worked with MPs to advance M-230, a private members’ motion by MP Dean Allison that called for greater awareness of anaphylaxis in Ottawa, and this motion passed the House of Commons with unanimous support.

In the spring, the Georges moved their home and business (again) across the province from St.
Catharines to Almonte, a small Ottawa Valley town 40 minutes from Parliament Hill.

2014

Chris served as campaign manager for Shaun McLaughlin’s successful 2014 mayoral bid in Mississippi Mills.

2015

Lisa started a healthy lifestyle consultancy after graduating from the Canadian School of
Natural Nutrition as a holistic nutritionist. She continued to support CG&A’s work behind the
scenes.

2016

The CMEC advocacy activities pivoted in Ottawa to defend the new copyright and
education framework as copyright lobbying intensified with a new federal government.
Chris began work with Dr. Merrilee Fullerton, assisting with strategic communications for her
nomination campaign process and the communications plan for the run up to the 2018 provincial election campaign.

2017

CG&A began providing media services and communications counseling to new clients: GotSkill?, a Canadian video skill-based gaming company, and Motion Pay, a fintech company that specializes in connecting Canadian retail businesses with Chinese tourists and diaspora.

2018

Chris began writing news commentary on federal politics, becoming a regular contributor to The Niagara Independent. The column is known for its fact-based critiques of the Ottawa political scene and has a readership from across Canada.

2019

CG&A continued working with CMEC and local business clients, and began new
communications support work with the Canadian Kitchen Cabinet Association and with the provincial constituency office in Kanata-Carleton.

2020

This year featured great challenges through a worldwide health pandemic, which led to
mandates and business lockdowns in Canada. Fortunately, CG&A actually grew its book of business during the 2020-22 pandemic years. Lisa took advantage of this period to learn chair upholstery and design skills, which has led to the creative outlet Sitting Pretty Chairs.

2021

Chris was a co-founder of Restaurant and Bar Support Fund, a not-for-profit organization
that was raising funds to help as many Ontario food and beverage establishments as possible to reopen and recover from the financial setbacks of the pandemic.

2022

Chris served as Merrilee Fullerton’s campaign manager for her successful re-election in
the spring provincial election.

2023

After more than 22 years, CG&A retired from CMEC work, where Chris represented the
country’s provincial education ministers in Ottawa on the issues of copyright and education.

2024

CG&A marked 30 years having worked for more than 85 clients — corporations, small
businesses, individuals, national associations and small volunteer-run organizations, public
institutions, government agencies and political initiatives.

In the spring, Chris launched a new By George Journal on Substack to expand his news commentary on federal politics. He is scheduled to publish three books on matters dealing with the Canada’s federal politics.

It is a strange trade that of advocacy. Your intellect, your highest heavenly gift is hung up in the shop window like a loaded pistol for sale.
